Recipes from Bicycling Australia Issue 155

Here are all the recipes you need to complete our 'Lose 5 Kilos in 28 Days' featured in Bicycling Australia Jan/Feb issue. Each of these has been tested by our staff for taste and variety.

Alenjandro Valverde

You only have to look at the start list of the Tour Down Under to see how its importance as a pre season race is increasing on the world stage. Last year we had Armstrong, Voigt and Hincapie. In 2010 the big names have increased with Cadel Evans and Alejandro Valverde joining the other stars. When I received the press release announcing Valverde’s attendance I immediately contacted Caisse d Epargne director Neil Stephens to arrange an interview.

Are you Legal?

A lot of nonsense has been spoken and written over the past few months regarding the UCI’s ‘new’ bike regulations. As the regulations vary for Road, MTB and the various Track disciplines, I will restrict my comments and explanations to road bikes, which is what most of us ride and is the area from where most conjecture has emanated.

We are all in this Together

Pedantically preparing my equipment the evening before and conscious to the sock line on clothing etiquette, I will take time to ponder on the loop intended and of course base the entire experience around the best coffee stop. Once out on the bike, finally, it is within about 15 minutes that welcome blood pours sufficiently back into oxygen starved muscles with a wince before a kick and splutter and then power on away – we are cycling!

The Start of Good things to come

Manchester Track World Cup. My first GOLD medal at a world cup. I had known for some time that I was going to be doing the Manchester World Cup (the first world cup of the track season), so this year I had given some planning as to where I wanted to be at leading into October.

Not quite the Love Shack, Baby!

It’s hard not to talk about transfers this time of year, but before that, and something closely related, is the emergence of Lance Armstrong’s all powerful, supposedly all-conquering, Team RadioShack, set to make its 2010 race debut at our very own Tour Down Under.

The Best Thing Since...

Is there anything better than the smell of freshly baked bread? And with so many varieties including low GI, iron enriched and even one that contains calcium, surely it is a healthy choice for active people? Unfortunately, I beg to differ.

Dehydration

Most Australians, whatever microclimate they live in, know the importance of hydration, especially cyclists, who often exercise for extended periods. Yet each summer, many are hospitalised due to simply not drinking enough fluids. Dehydration is not just feeling thirsty. It occurs when the body reaches a dangerously low level of water content, often caused by a sustained net loss of fluid. One third of our body is made up of water, and within our muscles the level rises to 75%.

Mud Sweat and Beers!

Although it’s our prime race season here Down Under, back in Europe they’re all sliding around in the mud and running with their bikes. They call it Cyclo-Cross, and it’s huge!
